CONSTRUCTION D’UN QUARTIER / CONSTRUCTION OF A
NEIGHBORHOOD, SAINT-GERMAIN-EN-LAYE (FRANCE)
L’aménagement de logements sur quatre hectares, territoire de fin de ZUP en attente, était un projet à la fois urbain et architectural. Le projet urbain trouve son expression la plus accomplie en assurant des continuités alors même que les bâtiments sont des plots isolés. L’unité urbaine est enrichie par la diversité architecturale qui a su ne pas différencier les bâtiments à partir de leur type de financement mais à partir de leur situation dans le projet. Le projet de mixité sociale autour d’un jardin central révèle un véritable souci de redonner à la ville ses titres de noblesse. Chaque immeuble a des façades attachées à l’orientation ou à la spécificité de la localisation dans le plan d’ensemble.

The planning of housing on four hectares of land (almost 10 acres) in an area that borders land that the government classed as « priority zone for urbanization », was an urban and architectural project. This was an accomplishment for urban planning as there is a continuity in the separate building plots. The urban unity is enriched by a diverse architecture that made a point to differentiate between the buildings based on their situation in the project and not based on their type of financing. The garden, which is a center of social interaction and diversity, is a demonstration of the city’s initiative and priorities. For each building there is a cohesion between the orientation of the building and the specificity of its location in the overall plan.
